Many people consider teaching as a career option, but very few consider teaching in the post-16 or adult education sector. There are many rewarding roles to motivate and inspire those further on in their lifelong learning journey. We introduce you to the different areas you can work in, and how you can prepare to apply for a job in the sector.
How to work in Adult Education (Post 16)
This week is #AdultLearnersWeek. This week raises awareness of the fact it is never too late to learn something new.
Most educators love their jobs because they are passionate about inspiring others to improve their lives in one way or another.
Whether this is self improvement through learning about wellbeing; learning a new skill, like arts or crafts; improving vocational skills in construction, hairdressing or health & social care; improving social skills through community projects … the list is endless of ways we can educate others.
This blog explores how to work in the three main adult (post-16) education sectors:
Work Based Learning, or Apprenticeships
We’ve all heard of apprenticeships. These are traditionally how people learn skills and knowledge whilst working “on the job”. To be an educator in work-based or apprenticeships, you must have excellent knowledge in a particular vocational sector, and usually, be qualified to level 3 in that sector, with good literacy and numeracy skills.
Work Based, or Apprenticeship assessors train and assess students to a set of occupational or industry standards. These may be set by an Awarding Organisation, or by an Industry Body. You will work with new entrants into the sector to impart your knowledge and skills, to mentor, to coach, to work with employers to develop the skills of the student.
You would be “work based” so out and about in different organisations, working one to one with students, in the main, ensuring that they are developing their skills and knowledge in line with the organisation and sector’s requirements.
You may also be required to support the development of literacy and numeracy skills.
To work in this sector you must have a qualification in Assessment. This is known as either CAVA (Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement) or sometimes referred to as TAQA Level 3.
You would work either for an organisation who trains and assesses new recruits internally e.g. NHS, Transport for Wales; or you would work for a Training Provider or College.
Here is Kevin’s story of how he became employed as a Carpentry Assessor at Bridgend College:
Kevin didn’t enjoy school. He spent most of his time in wood work or doing sport. The only reason he wasn’t expelled from school was that he was good at rugby – the headmaster was very supportive of him, and encouraged him to persevere in school. Kevin’s career’s advisor said he had 2 options – go to prison or join the army.
Kevin was determined not to do either, he did tried to join the RAF, but didn’t have a level 3 qualification, so he went to college to do a carpentry level 3 qualification. Kevin chose to learn carpentry as some of his family members were carpenters. He subsequently passed all the physical tests, aptitude tests for the RAF, but failed the hearing test.
Kevin then decided to pursue a career in carpentry. He became self employed and did a Heritage Association qualification. This allowed him to become highly skilled and he did a lot of high end work in London, including working on Prince Charles’ house and stately homes across the UK.
When he was working in London, his wife became pregnant and he wanted to come home to support her. He saw the role of an Assessor in Carpentry for Bridgend College advertised. He had always had apprentices with him when he was working. He had the patience to support them – he knew what he was like when he was younger and knew with a bit of guidance he could help these young people improve.
Kevin started in the college 6th January 2020, just before lockdown. He started by doing his Assessor course with Bridgend College. He then progressed to his Internal Quality Assurance qualification in February 2022. Kevin has enjoyed the learning process and enjoyed supporting other new assessors as part of the quality assurance process.
Kevin said that although there is a lot of paperwork involved in assessment, he find the job rewarding when his learners learn new skills with his support, achieve their qualifications and give him good feedback on how he has helped them.
Further Education
Similarly, this role requires you to be a vocational “expert” for you to be able to inspire and teach students against occupational standards. In FE you would instead be working with groups of students, and to a time table of scheduled classroom sessions.
You would look at giving your students the opportunity to learn from the real world by setting projects, arranging industry trips and speakers, getting involved in competitions. You would again be teaching to national occupational standards.
You don’t have to have qualifications to start working in FE. Once you are employed, a college will support you to undertake a PGCE course, so that you can learn how to teach others.
If you wanted to get a head start and show your commitment to becoming an FE Tutor / Lecturer, you could always complete an Award in Education and Training Level 3 or Training Skills Level 3 course.

Adult Community Learning
Adult Community Learning provision is generally run by councils in community hubs. It provides accessible learning opportunities for those looking to enter the labour market, returning to or want to progress in work.
Adult Community Learning often provides not only skills and knowledge e.g. literacy, numeracy, ESOL (English as a Second Language) IT, Employability, Arts and Crafts; but it importantly brings people together in a safe and nurturing environment.
To teach in the Adult Community Environment you will generally need a basic teaching qualification e.g. Award in Education and Training, Certificate in Learning and Development, Training Skills or the Assessor Qualification. You may also need a specific qualification in Teaching English as a Second Language, if you wanted to teach this.
Adult Community Learning posts are often part time or hourly paid allowing flexibility in this role.
Summary
Teaching others can be such a rewarding career and it isn’t limited to school children. Learning is for life. It will enable you to pass on your own experience in something you are passionate about and to inspire others in learning new knowledge and skills. It can also be flexible to fit around other commitments.
