6. Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (Level 3)
Award in Assessment of Vocationally Related Achievement or Award in Assessment of Competence in the Work Environment (Level 3)
Also known as “CAVA” for short or TAQA Level 3.
If you want to become a fully qualified assessor, there are a choice of 3 qualifications that depend on who, what and where you are assessing. See our useful flow chart at the top of the page to help you decide which qualification is most suitable for you.
You must be able to work with 2 learners in the workplace / classroom environment to demonstrate your assessing skills.
The course is delivered split into 3 parts:
- 4 half day workshops delivered via Zoom
- The completion of 3 assignments.
- Practical work – carrying out assessment activity in the workplace
By completing this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the role of an assessor and the principles and practices of assessment
- Plan assessments in the workplace with at least two learners
- Use different assessment methods, make assessment decisions and give feedback to learners
- Involve learners and others in the assessment process – ensuring decisions are countersigned, quality assured and that assessment practice is standardised
- Apply legal and regulatory requirements to your assessment
- Gain the industry-standard qualification for assessors in the UK

7. Certificate in Learning and Development Level 3
The role of the assessor includes teaching and training others, it’s not just purely assessing whether a standard has been met. It’s about teaching those skills and knowledge to enable learners to achieve the required standard or qualification.
The Certificate in Learning and Development Level 3 provides you with the skills and confidence to teach or train others. It includes units on how to facilitate learning; how to develop resources or learning programmes; how to make your teaching or training inclusive and accessible to all.
The Certificate in Learning and Development provides monthly group workshops; where you learn the skills of a trainer / assessor; as well a monthly mentoring with our Learning Advisor who will help you develop your skills to meet the requirements of the qualifications. Workshops include:
- Inclusive teaching and assessment
- Teaching methods and approaches
- Learning and development Principles and Context- setting the scene for how learning and development can take place
As this qualification is part of a Welsh Government Apprenticeship programme, you will also be invited to workshops to improve your digital literacy. You also have the opportunity to complete literacy and numeracy qualifications, if you don’t have GCSEs in Maths or English. You must be new into the learning and development role within the last 12 months , and live or work in Wales to be eligible for the funding. here are no age restrictions – you are never too old to become a tutor, trainer or assessor!
